American plans to cut another 1,200 jobs

DALLAS — American Airlines wants to eliminate 1,200 nonunion jobs as it cuts costs while under bankruptcy protection.

That pushes the company’s overall job-cut target to 14,200. It announced plans in February to cut 13 replica watches,000 union pilots replica watches, flight attendants and ground workers.

American, the nation’s third-biggest airline, has about 73,000 workers.

American outlined the cuts for many nonunion workers on Wednesday. The company wants to outsource the jobs of all airport skycaps and cargo agents, cancel a planned lump-sum payment that was due for nonunion workers next year, freeze their pension plan, cut vacation and paid holidays, and reduce medical benefits.

The airline says it will close a reservations call center in Tucson, Ariz., and lounges at Washington’s Dulles Airport and Kansas City International Airport.

The changes for agents and similar employees are expected to save $95 million, which American said would match the 20 percent cost-cutting targets for all other labor groups.

American and parent AMR Corp. filed for bankruptcy protection in November. AMR lost $2 billion last year, including restructuring costs replica watches, and has lost more than $10 billion since 2001.

In February, American announced plans to get rid of thousands of flight attendants and ground workers, as well as 400 pilots, and make other cost reductions designed to reduce annual labor costs by $1.25 billion. A hearing is scheduled to start Monday in New York on the company’s request to throw out union contracts and impose new pay, benefits and work-rule terms.

Sources Google Is Close to Buying Meebo

Google is in talks to acquire Meebo Tattoo Ink And Supplies, according to two sources close to the situation.

Meebo's latest product promises to help users cut through information overload.

Meebo CEO Seth Sternberg did not reply to requests for comment. A Google spokeswoman gave me the standard “We can’t comment on rumor or speculation” response.

Mountain View, Calif.-based Meebo has been around since 2005, when it was founded by Sternberg, Sandy Jen (who is CTO) Tattoo Supplies, and Elaine Wherry (now an advisor), who met at Stanford.

The company has dedicated the past seven years to all sorts of different social products and customers. First it was a Web-based instant message client (that’s still live as Meebo Messenger). Then it launched the Meebo Bar for publishers to add a persistent social sharing and advertising overlay on their sites. Currently, Meebo’s homepage is pushing a tool for users to “create an interest profile to get new and timely information about the things that matter to you.”

Meebo has raised quite a bit of funding over that time — more than $60 million, including a $25 million Series D round led by Khosla Ventures in 2010. Its other backers include Sequoia Capital and Draper Fisher Jurvetson.

Obama Signs JOBS Act Into Law

President Obama signed the Jumpstart Our Business Startups Act today, calling it a “game-changer” that would remove barriers that prevent small businesses from growing and hiring.

“Because of this bill, start-ups and small business will now have access to a big Herve Leger sale, new pool of potential investors — namely, the American people. For the first time, ordinary Americans will be able to go online and invest in entrepreneurs that they believe in Buy Emilio Pucci Dresses,” the president said in a Rose Garden signing ceremony.

The president said the JOBS Act  would make it easier for business owners to take their companies public, noting “that’s a big deal because going public is a major step toward expanding and hiring more workers.”

Going forward, the president said it was important to make sure the Securities and Exchange Commission  is properly funded “so that they can do the job and make sure that our investors get adequate protections.”

The president, surrounded for the second day in a row by lawmakers from both parties, said the bill “represents exactly the kind of bipartisan action we should be taking in Washington to help our economy.”

IIHS crashes convertibles too! Saab 9-3, Volvo C70

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) just wrapped up its own version of a clinical demolition derby on some of the newest drop tops around, and when the airbag dust settled Tattoo Supplies, the Saab 9-3 and the Volvo C70 earned the Institute’s Top Safety Pick award. A few of us around the Autoblog offices have made the case that the recently unveiled Volkswagen Passat CC should replace the current model and drop the “CC” suffix altogether. Next-gen Boxster to get a four cylinder

Automakers make up 10% of Forbes list of 100 large

Forbes has measured the largest 100 companies in the world, and 10 automakers have made the list.
